The cost of building a mobile app in India depends mostly on how many features it has, whether it runs on Android only or on Android and iOS, how much backend and admin work sits behind it, and how much design it needs. There is no honest single number, because two apps that look similar on the surface can need very different amounts of work. This guide shows what moves the price so you can compare quotes properly.

We build mobile apps in Flutter, so the examples below come from real work, including the [Trripah mobile app](/projects/trripah-mobile-app).

## What drives the cost

| Factor | Why it changes the price |
|---|---|
| **Number of screens and features** | Every screen and every rule is design, build and testing time |
| **Platforms** | One Flutter codebase can serve Android and iOS, which is usually cheaper than two separate native apps |
| **Backend and admin tools** | Most apps need servers, a database and a way for your team to manage content and users |
| **Accounts and login** | Phone OTP, social login and roles add work |
| **Payments** | Gateway integration, refunds and reconciliation need care |
| **Offline use, maps, camera, push notifications** | Each device feature adds build and testing effort |
| **Design** | A standard design system is faster than custom animation and brand-heavy screens |
| **Integrations** | Connecting to your CRM, WhatsApp, accounting or AI features takes extra time |

## Android only, or Android and iOS?

If your customers use both, plan for both from the start. With Flutter, one team builds one codebase for both platforms, so the second platform costs far less than a second app. Android-only can make sense for an internal tool where you know every user has an Android phone.

## The costs people forget

- **The backend.** An app without a backend is a brochure. Ask whether the quote includes APIs, the database and an admin panel.
- **Store accounts.** Google Play charges a one-time registration fee and Apple charges an annual developer fee. Check the current amounts, and make sure the accounts are in your company's name.
- **Third-party usage.** SMS, maps, payment gateway and AI services bill by use.
- **Updates.** Android and iOS release new versions every year, so apps need regular maintenance.

## How to get quotes you can compare

1. Write a one-page brief: who uses the app, the five most important things they do, and the systems it must connect to.
2. Ask each company to quote the same brief in writing, split into design, app, backend and testing.
3. Ask what is out of scope, and what a change request costs.
4. Ask who owns the code and the store accounts.
5. Compare what is included, not only the total.

## Start small

Build the smallest version that proves people will use it, then add features based on real usage. Our approach to a first release is in [MVP development: process and cost factors](/blog/mvp-development-process-and-cost-factors).

## FAQ

### How much does it cost to build an app in India?
It depends on scope. A simple app with few screens costs much less than one with payments, maps, offline use and an admin panel. We scope and quote in writing after understanding your needs, rather than quoting a number blind.

### Is Flutter cheaper than building native Android and iOS apps?
Usually, because one team builds one codebase for both platforms. Some features that rely on platform-specific code may need extra work.

### Does the quote include the backend?
Not always. Always ask. The backend, database and admin tools are often a large part of the work.

### Do I own the app and the code?
You should. Agree in writing that the code, the data and the Google Play and Apple accounts are in your name.

### What does it cost to maintain an app?
Plan for regular updates for new Android and iOS versions, fixes, server hosting and third-party services. Agree a support plan before launch.
